For mankind, breathing signifies life. The lungs perform the paramount function of breathing. To maintain a healthy body, healthy lungs are imperative. As the interface between the environment and the body, they also bear the onslaught of numerous infectious agents and environmental pollutants. Our lungs are affected by multiple disorders viz: infections e.g Tuberculosis, Obstructive diseases e.g Asthma and COPD, Restrictive disorders e.g Interstitial lung diseases and immunological ailments i.e Hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Although recent advancements in medical science have provided appropriate management for many such diseases, many new challenges e.g MDR-TB, XDR-TB are consistently appearing on the horizon. In Bangladesh , the field of respiratory medicine has bloomed over the years into a distinct entity and a thriving sector, leading to the advent of many pulmonologists. These pul monologists are working relentlessly for the amelioration of sufferings of patients with respiratory diseases in Bangladesh , the field of respiratory medicine has bloomed over the years into a thriving sector, leading to the advent of many pulmonologists. Dear colleagues, in Bangladesh , we have to operate in resource limited settings, in a developing country. Nevertheless we have the knowledge and skills to ensure satisfactory care for the millions. We believe that a wider forum is required for bringing together all the stake holders in the field of pulmonology. The forum shall address the needs of the care providers as well as care receivers – the patients. It shall endeavor to harness our limited resources to optimize quality of care. In this context, we have formed “Bangladesh Lung Foundation†as an umbrella organization to promote lung health in Bangladesh and the neighboring regions. It was formally launched on February 15, 2007 in Dhaka , Bangladesh .
We intend to hold the “First International Conference on Lung Health†during 20-22 February, 2008 in Dhaka , Bangladesh . It will be an unique opportunity for the pulmonologists of home and abroad to gather and share their knowledge and experiences. As well as, they will enjoy the cordial hospitality, scenic beauty and rich mughal heritage of Dhaka –the blooming cosmopolitan city
